Kivalliq Youth Mural Project

NACA facilitated three youth mural projects in the Kivalliq region throughout the month of March 2014.  The projects, which took place in Arviat, Rankin Inlet and Baker Lake, were led by avid arts programmer and NACA Communications Advisor Pascale Arpin.

Each project gave participants between the ages of 13-30 the opportunity to engage in the creative mural-making process from start to finish. From concept development to production, youth were guided through each step and encouraged to affirm their own artistic vision while developing new drawing and painting skills.  This project ultimately gave youth the chance to beautify a space in their community while also developing a sense of ownership and pride towards it.

The key skills acquired by the youth include: concept-building through brainstorming and group discussion, techniques related to sketching and drawing, techniques related to painting and mixing paint, defining and executing a personal artistic vision, working both individually and as part of a group, completing a project within a defined amount of time, and more.  The mural projects were a great success, as is demonstrated not only by the final products but also by the positive comments received by the participants.  Many of the participants began the workshop feeling shy or insecure about their abilities and unsure of how to express their artistic vision and ended the week demonstrating a great improvement in their self-confidence and ability to create and express themselves freely.  The Nunavut Arts & Crafts Association is extremely pleased with the way the projects unfolded and particularly happy to have been able to offer this opportunity to youth in three communities of the Kivalliq region.
