Safety Awareness for Artists and Carvers
Workers' Compensation Board
Deadline: Anytime. A minimum of 10 students are needed to stage a course.
The Workers' Compensation Board of Northwest Territories and Nunavut offers a free course to individual artists and artists associations called 'Safety Awareness for Artists and Carvers.' It covers the history of Workers' Compensation, the Personal Optional Coverage accident insurance available to artists, safety as an attitude, personal protective equipment, tool safety and more. Once a participant completes this course, he can train others in his own community. The course arms artists with an increased awareness of safe work habits, promotes safety and provides information on safe practices. This is crucial knowledge since many quarries in Nunavut are not owned by any one person or company - and no one is responsible for seeing that the Mine Health and Safety Act is followed. The Workers' Compensation Board urges artists to establish quarry training programs in their communities.
